Super Street Fighter 4 Teaches You About Turkish Oil Wrestling

Written by from on March 10th, 2010 | 0 Comments

At a press event in San Francisco yesterday, Capcom announced the last character in Super Street Fighter 4’s s roster: Hakan, an Arabic wrestler whose main mechanic involves pouring oil all over his body. It’s not as goofy as it sounds; Turkish wrestlers bathe themselves in olive oil as a means of spiritual and religious significance. Capcom has adopted this tradition into Hakan’s motif, and as a result created a powerful grappler who plays like a mix of the Russian wrestler Zangief, and the Japanese sumo wrestler E. Honda. Similar to other grapplers in the Street Fighter series, Hakan’s a big threat in close-range — but getting close to the opponent is challenge, simply because of his weak mobility.

Super Robot Taisen Prequel Announced

Over in Japan this week, Namco Bandai Games took the veils off Masou Kishin: The Lord of Elemental , the latest game in their sprawling Super Robot Taisen series of anime-inspired robot sims. The game is due out for the Nintendo DS May 27 in Japan for the retail price of 6090 yen. The Lord of Elemental is more than just another SRT Original Generation title — it’s the one that kicked off the whole series, sort of. Originally released in 1996 for the Super NES in Japan, the game marks the debut of hot-blooded robot pilot Masaki Ando and his elementally-powered craft Cybaster, popular enough that they starred in a 26-episode TV anime in 1999. Once a normal Japanese kid, Masaki gets his mecha career kick-started in this game when he’s summoned to La Gias, a world housed under the Earth’s crust, and asked to pilot one of the four elemental robots built by the kingdom of Languran to stave off a prophesied disaster. “We’ve never dug into the backbone of Masaki and Cybaster, even though they both appear regularly in the SRTOG series,” producer Takanobu Terada told Famitsu magazine this week. “The Lord of Elemental answers the question of where those characters came from.”

Super Meat Boy Brings Some Bloody, Old-School Platforming to Wii

Written by from on February 26th, 2010 | 0 Comments

Crushingly hard games aren’t usually as fun as Super Meat Boy . Don’t let the game’s bloody, blobby protagonist fool you; you will fail in this game — a lot. But unlike the crushing defeat of something like early Mario or Mega Man games, you don’t lose all your progress when you run out of lives. In fact, during the main game, you have unlimited lives. The game’s co-creator, Edmund McMillen was on-hand at Nintendo’s Media Summit to talk about his latest creation, which you might know from the popular flash game Meat Boy . While the characters and controls are basically the same, everything else is being remade for this downloadable, “super”-ed up version.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Makes Us Happy By Adding Drills And Yoshi

There’s one simple phrase that accurately describes every experience I’ve had when playing anything starring Mario : “Mario games make me happy.” It is, in all likelihood, a nostalgia thing. I prefer to believe it as a testament to the purity of a Mario game; how it can combine the feel of player movement, the design and layout of the world, and the (wonderfully) wacky tools to navigate the world and its obstacles with. I basically can’t help but grin when I have Mario buttstomp an enemy, or jump his way past some rotating firewalls, or duck underneath a nasty Thwomp, or any other marquee Mario moment. I already am a bit giddy at seeing the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer below, but here are some specific things that just made me smile while playing.

SFIII Characters Confirmed for Super Street Fighter IV

As we reported just yesterday , Dudley is the latest addition to the Super Street Fighter IV roster — and he isn’t alone, either. Capcom confirmed in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine that three characters from Street Fighter III — female ninja Ibuki, hard-nosed karate girl Makoto, and swarthy English gentleman Dudley — will be joining in the SSFIV fray. Each one will have a few ultra combos to choose from, of course, including Ibuki’s Yoroi-toshi throw, Dudley’s Corkscrew Cross hurricane punch, and Makoto’s Seichusen Godantsuki combo strike. These three characters, along with the other new guys in the roster (which, so far, include Juri, Adon, T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Guy and Cody), will all be available for play once the game’s released April 27. They won’t be the last revealed, no doubt…

Dudley May Come to Super Street Fighter 4

We know that there are still a few open slots for the cast of Super Street Fighter 4 , and we may have just learned about another of the fighters primed for a come-back. A new screenshot (above) posted on TheNetwork.com shows off Balrog being hit in the face with a rose. This has led to speculation that the gentleman boxer Dudley from Street Fighter 3 could be making a reappearance. The character used a rose held in his boxing glove as his trademark. The expanded roster has filled out the two missing world warriors from Super Street Fighter 2 along with some from the Alpha series . It would make sense to slip in a few more fighters from Street Fighter 3; it still enjoys heavy praise among the tournament circuit. All the same, this is one screenshot and our only hint is a rose, so don’t take it as gospel quite yet. We’ll let you know if, or when, we get official word.

Capcom and Microsoft Have "Many Surprises" Coming on January 26

Written by from on January 22nd, 2010 | 0 Comments

Speculation began to rage after the above image showed up on the Xbox Japan website yesterday. Although you might not be able to see it now, Capcom confirmed on their blog that there will be unveils at an event next Tuesday, January 26. But while the image (via andriasang.com ) suggests that it might simply be the announcement of a single new game (something that’s likely to be a timed exclusive on the Xbox 360, if not an outright exclusive), the blog referred to “all the delicious secrets” that they have in store, so there could be much more than a single game to show off. Even better than that, the blog also promises that “some of the news will be of interest to a global gamer audience.” That’s a pretty ambiguous statement, but at least we know this isn’t a Japan-only announcement. But what could it possibly be? Resident Evil with Natal support? Something to do with Super Street Fighter IV ? A new Devil May Cry ? Let us know what you’re expecting (or hoping) to see at the event in the comments section.
