New Lord of the Rings Online Expansion Announced

Written by from on September 4th, 2009 | 0 Comments

Turbine’s relaunch of Dungeons & Dragons Online is on the horizon, but that’s not all the developer has in store for us this year. This morning they announced Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood , a new digital expansion for their other fantasy MMORPG. Along with the usual additions you’d expect from an expansion like this, Siege of Mirkwood will wrap up the story arc of Lord of the Rings: Mines of Moria , culminating in a showdown at the Ringwraith stronghold of Dol Guldur. Other new features include a raised level cap of 65, new skills and traits, retooled combat and crafting systems, several new instanced dungeons, and something called Skirmishes — randomized instances that allow players to lead squads of customized soldiers into battle. Siege of Mirkwood should be available for download sometime later this fall. Turbine hasn’t announced a specific release date or price for the expansion just yet, but the wording in the press release seems to imply that it will be a for-pay addition to the game.

He was speaking in response to the question of whether the two-year-old MMO had seen a drop-off in player activity. “If anything, The Lord of the Rings Online is growing,” he said. “We have no plans to merge servers.”
