South Korean Couple Lets Baby Die While Nurturing Virtual Child

Written by from on March 6th, 2010 | 0 Comments

Sometimes, stories about video game addiction are alarmist malarkey to bump up ratings. Other times, they’re just flat-out tragic: The Next Web reports that a couple in South Korea has been arrested for allegedly allowing their prematurely born baby to starve to death while they were busy tending to a virtual kid at an Internet cafĂ©. The couple reportedly fed their baby only once a day between 12-hour stretches of play-time with a popular role-playing game called Prius Online , in which they were busy raising a virtual kid. The autopsy report of their baby showed the death was a result of a long period of malnutrition. “The couple seemed to have lost their will to live a normal life, because they didn’t have jobs and gave birth to a premature baby,” said South Korean police officer Chung Jin-won. “They indulged themselves in the online game of raising a virtual character so as to escape from reality, which led to the death of their real baby.”

Blur’s Delay Is Making It A Better Game

Written by from on March 2nd, 2010 | 0 Comments

Blur is not the same game it was nine months ago. When I saw the game at E3 last June, it was easy to understand the potential of the action-racer, and nod approvingly to the various planned (but not completely demonstrated) features in the game — but the multiplayer demo on the show floor told a less concrete tale. Blur’s speedy mixture of licensed cars with Mario Kart -style weapons and power-ups didn’t create a very cohesive mix in execution, generating some fear that Bizarre Creation’s first racer following the Project Gotham Racing series could come up short. Luckily, publisher Activision saw the same discrepancies and knows the importance of making a strong impression with a new property, and thus decided to pull back the nearly completed racer for several additional months of development. Bizarre plans to reintroduce the game to the world with next week’s Xbox 360 online beta test, and we were invited to Liverpool, England to test out the multiplayer at a venue near the developer’s studio. And though the promising single-player campaign remains under wraps, both the online and split-screen multiplayer modes impressed — presenting a more cohesive, impactful, and raucous racing experience than previously demoed.

Bungie Planning a Final Farewell For Halo 2 Online on April 14

Written by from on February 8th, 2010 | 0 Comments

With Xbox Live support for original Xbox titles set to be discontinued on April 15, the online multiplayer of Bungie’s beloved Halo 2 doesn’t have much time left. On April 15, all original Xbox games will no longer be able to access Live (whether played on an original Xbox or an Xbox 360). The reasoning behind the decision is to allow Xbox Live to continue to evolve in ways that are currently restricted by the ongoing support of original Xbox games. But as a result, unless you pick up a copy of Halo 2 on PC, the last opportunity to play the game online will be on April 14 — and Bungie is planning on having the game go out with a bang. Details will be revealed in the upcoming weeks, but a post on Bungie.net tells fans to “mark your calendars now – on April 14th let’s all rally to go online for one last hoorah.” It’ll be “[o]ne final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2.” Beyond Bungie staff joining in on the fun online, your guess is as good as any as to what else they have in store for Halo 2’s last day online. Whatever it is, the game will have had a hell of a six-and-a-half year run.
