Next EVE Online Expansion Named Dominion, Coming This Winter
Written by from on August 31st, 2009 | 0 CommentsWith ten expansions in the bag, what is there left for EVE Online developer CCP Games to do? An eleventh expansion, of course! Entitled Dominion , this next free expansion will focus on alliance warfare and is slated to release sometime this winter. As explained in the official announcement post on EVE’s website, “It offers a complete overhaul of the current sovereignty mechanics in favor of a system that’s a brilliant mix of our game design vision and the input we’ve received from fans.” You can also expect to see some integration of the new COSMOS social network and new epic arcs for pirate factions, among other changes. A section of EVE’s website dedicated to Dominion has been launched , albeit with nothing to be seen right now. You’ll want to keep your eye on it for forthcoming updates over the next few months as we near Dominion’s release.
Half-Minute Hero Hands-On Preview
Written by from on August 31st, 2009 | 0 CommentsWhen you think of role-playing games, particularly Japanese ones, “lightning-fast combat” and “instant gratification” aren’t always the first words that come to mind. But that’s just what Half-Minute Hero from XSeed is trying to bring to the genre. Instead of spending hours grinding, upgrading your gear, and slowly fighting stronger and stronger enemies, you can accomplish almost all your goals in a mere half-minute. When you enter one of the game’s deliberately generic-looking RPG levels, you have a scant 30 seconds to level up, vanquish some superstrong boss, and save the world. But nothing in Half-Minute Hero moves at a regular pace; your character moves fast, but holding down Circle or buying a horse makes you move even faster, and you gain a level after almost every enemy encounter. The world maps are small (at least early on), and the towns are even smaller, which lets you navigate the game map in a matter of seconds. Time stops whenever you enter a village, but the merchants I met in the preview demo I played sold only one item each, and the townsfolk kept their messages pithy.
PlayStation 3’s New 3.0 Firmware Now Available
Written by from on August 31st, 2009 | 0 CommentsSony has released the latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 tonight — version 3.00 for those who are counting. The update was announced alongside the new 120GB PS3 Slim at GamesCom 09 a few weeks ago and includes a bevy of new features. In case you’ve forgotten or missed it the first time around, once updated, you’ll be treated to a redesigned friends list, new PlayStation Store shortcuts from the XMB, enhanced Trophy support for games with add-ons, dynamic XMB themes, premium avatars, a new status indicator, and a “What’s New” section displaying new PlayStation news and content. As is usual with PlayStation firmware updates, it’s a sizable download and will take a fairly long time to update — make sure and get downloading before you want to hop on PSN for some online gaming.

DeathSpank First-Look Preview
Written by from on August 31st, 2009 | 0 CommentsBack in early 2004, DeathSpank wasn’t a game idea so much as an inside joke. Ron Gilbert — best known for his work on LucasArts adventure games in the late ’80s/early ’90s — and Clayton Kauzlaric — who worked with Gilbert at Cavedog Entertainment in the late ’90s — decided it would be fun to spoof game industry clichés with a series of online comics, and they needed a name for, in Gilbert’s words, a “ridiculous over-the-top computer game hero.” Kauzlaric suggested “Deathspank” and the name stuck, so they used him as a centerpiece while mocking cut-scenes, review scores, excessive violence, and other game-relevant topics. These were spare-time projects, but as the series evolved, the duo found they couldn’t stop thinking about that character.
